Mahanadi: Coal Rich, Water Stressed

A study on the need of building inter-state cooperation in managing one of India's major rivers

Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and Mahanadi River Waterkeeper are organizing a release of their study titled ‘Mahanadi: Coal Rich, Water Stressed.’ The study analyses the implications of coal fired power plants along the Mahanadi River on the local and indigenous communities in these areas which are already and/or will be impacted by the increased water scarcity. The water stress situation in the River has also become a reason for the ongoing strife between the two riparian states Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

The study includes a secondary literature review on the effectiveness of the Interstate River Water Disputes Act and makes recommendations that the states and the centre need to take up in dealing with such water conflicts and in recognising people’s rights over the river water. The research was carried out to build a deeper understanding on the issues grappling Mahanadi and the need for cooperation among concerned stakeholders in managing shared resources.

The research was conducted by noted water expert Ranjan Panda with support from the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung.
