Can family reunification still be rescued?
StreitWert - Politik im Dialog
On the 1st of February, the German parliament suspended family reunification until August 2018. In the countries of origin, this mainly affects women and children, putting them in even greater danger. Furthermore, the knowledge that one’s spouse and children are in mortal danger makes it virtually impossible for a refugee to truly arrive in a new country. As recently as November 2017, the majority of people living in Germany spoke out in favor of family reunification; now the majority is against it. According to a statement by migration researcher Herbert Brücker in January 2018, only around 50,000 to 60,000 family members would follow this year. Even in the face of these figures, the negotiators of Germany’s grand coalition remain unmoved.
Is there nonetheless a way to save family reunification? What political strategies would be appropriate to mobilize civil society? What is the historical background of the decades-long dispute over the right to reunite one’s own family? And why is Germany struggling so hard with this idea?
