Driving regional cooperation forward in the 2030 renewable energy framework
The European institutions have all repeatedly called for regional cooperation in the context of the 2030 climate and energy framework and the Energy Union debate. The current Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union emphasises the need for regional cooperation and has presented a methodology for drafting national plans in order to reach the EU’s climate and energy targets. Regional renewables cooperation offers a lot of untapped potential to effectively bridge the gap between national renewables policies and a Europeanised approach to renewables deployment.
To what extent can regional renewables cooperation contribute to reach or even exceed the European-level target of “at least 27%” renewable energy sources by 2030? Which forms of regional renewables cooperation work well and which ones should be explored further? How can regional cooperation be fostered and further strengthened to meet the European ambition for renewables in the 2030 framework?
These questions are explored in a report commissioned by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union and written by Ecofys. The findings will be presented for the first time at this panel discussion in order to make a timely contribution to the ongoing policy debate on the EU’s renewables future. The report “Driving regional cooperation forward in the 2030 renewable energy framework” analyses what types of cooperation could develop and explores how regional cooperation can effectively contribute to a European energy transition, both from a bottom-up and a top-down perspective. The key results will be discussed with representatives from the European institutions as well as different stakeholders.
*This event takes place under the patronage of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
