We invite you cordially to a series of public events on "Solidarity and Resistance - Open lectures on Contemporary Turkey", where the focus is on critical analysis, resistance practices, as well as possibilites of solidarity. The prelude is the Panel discussion "Political Polarization in the Context of the Referendum in Turkey". The outcome of the referendum and the ongoing struggles of opposition movements in Turkey will be discussed here.
Many debates in Germany affecting public opinion around Turkey increasingly place solely the person of Erdoğan at the centre of analysis, thus ignoring critical analysis of the development of dictatorships, their historical embeddedness and global entanglements, and erasing the presence of civil society resistance. As a university with a long-standing cooperation with Turkish universities and institutions, as well as offering an academic focus on Turkey for social work students, this open lecture series seeks to
outline critical perspectives and solidarity practices for the Alice Salomon University as a university with civic responsibilities.
During the open lecture series "Resistance and Solidarity" we will critically examine contemporary political processes in Turkey, while focusing on the political repressions that many civic groups in Turkey face, as well as on practices of resistance to said repression. Furthermore, the lecture series seeks to discuss the possibilities of solidarity in Germany. (Queer-)Feminist perspectives will constitute a central reference frame for such a discussion.
The lecture series consists of three panel discussions. Several experts from the Academics for Peace Initiative and other activist groups/contexts will be presenting on their respective topic and seek an active and inspiring exchange with the audience. The issues discussed in the first two sessions examine, on the one hand, the political polarization in the context of the referendum regarding the presidential system. On the other hand, the struggle for autonomy and democracy in the Kurdish movement in Turkey will be debated.
Preceding the final lecture, an exhibition by the berlin-based and student-led solidarity campaign for imprisoned students in Turkey will take place.
The lecture series will be held in English. Possibilities for translation are being checked.
