Lecture on “Green Economy: Promises and Pitfalls”

The concept of “Green Economy” attempts reconciling ecology and economics. However, while discussing the necessity for a greener cleaner economy, it has become imperative to take into consideration the impacts of the global ‘brown’ industrial dictates that have for so long driven the world’s economy. How do we move forward from a fossil depended age to a low-emission and resource-efficient future? Can it be “business as “usual” by using technological innovations and new mechanisms such as “Carbon Credits”, “Red Plus”? Or do we need a shift in the fundamental paradigm shift and change our lenses?

In the context of the development of the North Eastern region, this is most relevant: The region is rich in mineral and natural resources but yet not significantly developed in heavy industries. As it gets poised for economic growth, there are growing issues related to mining, deforestation and water pollution, resulting in considerable ecological destruction, climatic imbalance and social inequity. There is a need for a deeper understanding of the politics of “green”. Especially in North East India, communities have a say in decision-making on the use of resources – but are they making the right choices? Are their voices heard at national and global decision-making circles? This debate can give scope for making informed choices on the direction for the future and set the paradigm of growth for the region and nation at large.

This interaction offers a unique opportunity for sharing between a global activist on the one hand and senior policy makers, academia, activists and the civil society, on the other hand to dive deeper in to the issues.
