Energy Atlas 2018: What are the benefits of developing renewable energy sources in Poland?

Panel discussion

10 December, 2018, 10.30–14.00
Climate Hub, Rondo Ziętka 1, Katowice, Poland

The Heinrich Böll Foundation in Warsaw and the Institute for Sustainable Development have the pleasure of inviting you to: Energy Atlas 2018: What are the benefits of developing renewable energy sources in Poland?

Green energy modernisation doesn’t simply involve replacing fossil fuels with windmills and photovoltaic panels, but also changing the existing energy system to one in which all citizens play an active role and have concrete opportunities to act. It means developing an energy democracy: a departure from large, centralised power plants powered by fossil fuels in favour of civic energy and creating local energy communities built by municipalities and cities, schools and libraries, entrepreneurs and companies, as well as citizens themselves working together towards sustainable energy management. This process will also involve significant changes to our daily habits and ways of thinking, in relation not only to electricity, but also to heating and cooling, mobility and transport.

Is it possible to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources, and on what time-scale? How can Europe do it – including Poland, which is facing the challenge of a fair transformation, which is to say modernising a coal-based economy towards a sustainable future? How can climate protection action and supporting pro-environmental innovations be combined with building prosperity and improving the quality of life for all in a democratic and socially just way? These and other issues are analysed in “Energy Atlas", a publication that shows the opportunities afforded by comprehensively changing the current energy system to one that is sustainable and climate-ambitious.

The Polish edition of the “Energy Atlas" is being issued at a special time and an exceptional location: during the COP24 Climate Summit – at a key moment in the process of international climate negotiations, and in Katowice, which was until recently considered a symbol of Polish coal-based energy and is today growing as a place of sustainability innovations.

During the debate, with our invited guests, we would like to talk about the opportunities that may come to Poland as a result of European climate ambitions and consider how to put Poland onto a renewable track, taking into consideration the roles that both politics and society play in the process.
