Nuclear energy: getting to the core

Empowering youth in understanding and tackling nuclear energy issues

Although Europe has experienced a nuclear disaster 35 years ago (the Chernobyl nuclear plant), nuclear power energy remains present in the table of EU decision-makers, considering it as an alternative resource to meet the climate targets and the commitments of the EU Member states for renewable and clean energy.

At the current moment -the climate and energy crisis- where the EU is placed in has sparked the divide over nuclear power and the necessity for the involvement of CSOs and youth-led climate and environmental movements in the debate is pivotal who have become catalyst stakeholders in advocating for ambitious climate targets both in their local communities and in the international arena.

To better understand the dynamic and enhance the participation of youth in the debate of European energy production, it is important to equip young people with proper knowledge and information on the complexity of nuclear power energy including:

  • The past and current state of nuclear power energy in Europe;
  • The complexity of nuclear power energy – waste storage, risks, and uncontrollability factors;
  • The key stakeholders involved in the energy production, particularly nuclear energy in Europe

That is why we are organizing an online workshop The state of nuclear power energy in Europe, a youth viewpoint on why nuclear energy is not the answer to tackle the climate crisis, which is a part of a project Nuclear Energy: Getting to the core.  The project is supported by Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union office.
