24th Foreign Policy Conference - Expert Session

Defending Europe in Uncertain Times

Closed Session - on invitation only. Please register before Friday, 26 January 2024.

Background
Three overlapping geopolitical crises in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and East Asia have put the European security and defence question back on the political agenda: Is the EU ready and capable to defend its interests and its principles in a more competitive and aggressive world? And does it have a credible fallback option, should the transatlantic cooperation falter in the years to come?

Our Expert Session on 2 February 2024 will conclude our 24th Foreign Policy Conference and focus on current challenges in Transatlantic Burden Sharing in three crisis regions: Ukraine, the Western Balkans and the Indo-Pacific. It will end with an assessment of Germany’s role in a new European and Transatlantic Security Order.

Lead questions:
•    Where is the US heading – with or without Joe Biden as 47th President of the United States?
•    What do Berlin and Brussels have to do to keep the United States engaged in Europe?
•    What does the Ukraine need to win against Russia, and how can the transatlantic community support Kyiv in its war of liberation?

The Conference will be held in English without translation.
