30 Years of the EU Single Market

This year, the European Union celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of the European Single Market. As a core project of European integration, the Single Market offers a multitude of solutions - be it for energy security and common environmental and consumer standards, as a sales market, or as a common economic area of international importance. But time and again it has become apparent that in many areas the European Single Market is far from complete. Especially in view of the international competition for green technologies and the rising cost of living, the European Single Market must assert itself and evolve further. Much remains to be done.

Against this background, the European Council has commissioned Enrico Letta, President of the Jacques Delors Institute, to write a report on the future of the European Single Market.

What are the current challenges for the European Single Market? What strategic course of action should be prioritised now? And how can the Single Market drive socio-ecological change and contribute to a stronger Europe?
