After the Myanmar Sham Elections: What’s Next?

In war-torn Myanmar, elections are currently held in three rounds (28 December, 11 January, 25 January). Most international observers describe these “elections” as a “farce”: polling can only take place in parts of the country, the military has deregistered parties and candidates that could question their authority, and the very junta holding the elections is continuing to fly airstrikes against the civilian population. What do these elections mean for Myanmar’s domestic politics and its international standing?
What are possible reactions by civil and armed resistance in Myanmar? And what could be appropriate ways for the international community, including Germany, to react?
