Anne Klein Women's Award 2022 to Yosra Frawes
The 2022 Anne Klein Women's Award goes to Yosra Frawes, Tunisian feminist and international activist for women's rights, lawyer and feminist poet.
The 2022 Anne Klein Women's Award goes to Yosra Frawes, Tunisian feminist and international activist for women's rights, lawyer and feminist poet. Yosra Frawes is the first Tunisian woman to head the Maghreb and Middle East office of the international organisation Fédération Internationale pour les Droit Humains (FIDH) as Executive Director. She was also President of the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women (ATFD) until July 2021.
Already in 2000, long before the Arab Spring, the lawyer Yosra Frawes started a petition for gender equality in Tunisian inheritance law. Law 58 on the elimination of violence against women was also passed thanks to her involvement in 2017 as part of the National Coalition to Combat Violence against Women, a historic success.
In Tunisia, human and women's rights were strengthened by the 2014 Constitution. The disputes over reforming civil and criminal law are taking place in the context of a rather traditionalist social culture and a primarily conservative judiciary. The assumption of power by President Kais Said last summer has also led to a temporary end to the separation of powers, which complicates any steps to implement the rights enshrined in the constitution.
