Assessing the Multi-Sector Institutional Framework for Advancement of Gender Equality and Reflecting on the Gender Equality Agenda in Kenya
Gender Forum Invite
At the Nairobi Safari Club, University Way
ENTRY FREE
Synopsis:
Kenya has come a long way in the advancement of gender equality. Key gains have been the Constitution of Kenya, national gender machineries, affirmative action in favour of women and programmes designed to address inequality. Since the passing of the Constitution, different methodologies have been adopted and different institutions have been in the lead to successfully implement these gains. One year since the assumption of office of the new government and with only months to the close of the MDGs, it is an opportune time to take stock of the Gender Equality Agenda in Kenya.
The Gender forum will dialogue with identified stakeholders and the public in seeking to understand the strategies adopted toward the advancement of equality and gender responsive development. It also appreciates the multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary approach needed to achieve this collective agenda.
Key discussion points:
- What is the framework adopted by different institutions to advance gender equality in their respective sectors?
- To what extent do these frameworks complement each other?
- What strategies are in place to ensure that gender issues are taken into consideration both in programming as well as in the workplace?
- How is gender mainstreaming as a strategy implemented and what outcomes are anticipated?
- How do the institutions represented share information and/or programme jointly?
- To what extent do national and institutional budgets support gender equality programmes?
Discussion Panel:
The discussion panel comprises top level officials from the private sector, government, international development partners, media, civil society, and independent commissions.
About the Gender Forum:
The Gender Forum is a monthly public dialogue convened by the Heinrich Böll Stiftung since 2001, encouraging dialogue on pertinent national issues with a gendered lens. It brings together scholars, law makers and implementers, civil activists, government institutions, students and the general public, aiming at sharing knowledge and inspiring gendered analysis of policy and programmes. The forum also convenes in Kisumu in partnership with KEFEADO and travels around the country in response to county needs.
