The Beginning of the End for the Iranian Regime?
Since the American-Israeli attacks on Iran and the killing of supreme leader Ali Khamenei on February 28, the Iranian regime has been literally fighting for its survival. The majority of Iranians want the regime to be overthrown and a political transition to take place. At the same time, people fear the immediate consequences of war and a continuation of the regime's violence and repression.
The people of Iran are mourning their dead relatives and friends. In early January, the regime brutally murdered thousands of people in the streets in order to crush mass protests across the country. The people are angry at the regime, which has oppressed them for decades and led the country into economic ruin. According to a survey, 89 percent of Iranians want a democratic system.
However, it is far from certain that military intervention by the US and Israel is an effective means of initiating a democratic transition in Iran. This is partly because the opposition forces in the country have so far lacked unified and effective organizational structures. It is also possible that repression within the country could now increase further or that the current regime could be replaced by another authoritarian regime.
Together with Iranian experts, activists, and journalists, we want to better understand how people in Iran are currently faring, how oppression and war are affecting them. What impact are the regime's massacres having on society? What opportunities do Iranians see for the overthrow of the regime and the beginning of a political transformation process? What is needed for a democratic transition in Iran? How can the crimes committed by the regime be effectively documented and brought to justice? What kind of support does Iranian civil society want from Germany and Europe?
