Boell Debate - A Socio-Economic Analysis of Renewable Energy in Palestine

Presentation and Discussion

The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung cordially invites you to a presentation by Dr. Yousef Daoud about his research “A Socio-Economic Analysis of Renewable Energy in Palestine”. This is the fourth event in a loose series of discussions on current political, social, and environmental affairs which aim to bring together Palestinian and international representatives from civil society, government, and other sectors.

Input: Dr. Yousef Daoud and Sameera Musaibeh (Birzeit University)

Commentary: Mohammad Al Helu (Palestinian Solar and Sustainable Energy Society, PSSES)

There are immense potential benefits to changing the status-quo of energy production in the Palestinian economy. A domestic renewable energy supply can reduce the dependence on Israel to supply electricity to the Palestinian population. In the past, Israel has often cut off fuel supplies as a reaction to delays in debt payments, sometimes affecting hospitals and schools. In addition, electricity imports rank very high among the total Palestinian imports, resulting in a large trade deficit. Import substitution in this regard is recommended by international agencies (UNCTAD, 2010). Lastly, although the Palestinian economy is not a major producer of CO2 emissions, renewable energy production contributes to a better environment.

How can addressing and quantifying some of these issues benefit policy makers and stakeholders? We invite representatives from public institutions, Palestinian civil society, and academia to discuss the potential of the study and share their feedback and recommendations. Dr. Daoud and Ms. Musaibeh will present the aim of their research, followed by a brief statement by Mr. Al Helu (PSSES) and a discussion.

Input will be partially in English; the discussion will be conducted in Arabic (no translation).
