Changing Indo-Pacific security architecture
Global power shifts and the future of EU-Indo-Pacific cooperation
The Indo-Pacific has become a geopolitical focal point. Security and prosperity of countries in the region are intertwined with both the United States and China. Global power shifts are, thus, affecting the calculus of Indo-Pacific states. “Expect a refocus on self-reliance,” an Asian diplomat told Politico. But what does that mean? At a closed-door discussion, we will debate how Indo-Pacific countries are navigating their twin dependence on the U.S. and China – and how this is changing the regional security architecture. We will analyse trends in defense spending and partnership formation. And, we will discuss how this evolving security environment will impact Indo-Pacific cooperation with the EU. A recent study shows that partners in the region do not view the European Union as a geopolitical actor. At this event, we will get into why that is and what needs to change.
This event is by invitation only. For more information, please contact to Dr. Katharina Emschermann: Katharina.Emschermann [at] eu.boell.org.
