Discussion on the interim report of the Study Commission on Lessons from Afghanistan for Germany’s Comprehensive International Engagement in the Future (Enquete-Kommission Afghanistan)

In summer 2022, the Bundestag established a Study Commission with the aim of drawing lessons from Germany’s involvement in Afghanistan for foreign and security policy in future. The Commission investigates the entire period of German involvement in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021. On this basis, approaches are to be developed with a view to optimizing the networked approach as a fundamental principle of German foreign policy. In February 2024 the Study Commission published the interim report, which  investigated what had been done, what mistakes had been made, but also what assistance had reached the people of Afghanistan and to what extent the country’s structures had been improved. The report summarizes the key findings from the hearings and the work of the project groups as well as the expertise contributed by the members of the Commission, experts and Members of the Bundestag.

The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung invites representatives of the Afghan exile community to an exchange with MdB Schahina Gambir (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), member of the Study Commission on the results and conclusions from the interim report. This discussion is supposed to provide feedback for the second part of the work of Study Commission and on current policies on Afghanistan.

The exchange will take place on 16.05.2024 from 15:30 – 17:00.
Venue: Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, Schumannstr. 8, 10117 Berlin

The exchange will be held in hybrid format i.e. you are invited to join the discussion in our premise or online. The link for online participation will be provided after your registration.
