Enough is Enough

Goma between resource curse and armed violence

Goma, the embattled metropolis of several million inhabitants in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, towers over one of the world’s largest deposits of coveted raw materials that power smartphones, electric cars and the energy transition. Yet for the local population, daily life is marked by violence: rebel groups such as the M23 control mines and trade routes and finance themselves through illegal businesses, civilians become victims of armed violence or flee to makeshift camps—with no prospect of a better future.

In his essayistic documentary, director Elisé Sawasawa accompanies a population fighting for survival in Goma and the surrounding area. The film gives a voice to protagonists who feel forgotten by the world, even though their lived reality is closely intertwined with global supply chains. How does permanent conflict change the lives of Congolese people? Which fears and sorrows are instrumentalized against the frequently invoked “enemy” that must supposedly be crushed? And what future is there for a youth that feels forlorn?

These and other questions will be discussed with:

  • Elisé Sawasawa, Director, DR Congo
  • Christian Bitwaiki, Producer, Molakisis Films, DR Congo
  • Marianne Dumoulin & Jacques Bidou, Producers, JBA Production, France
