FrauenWelten 2026: MOTHER, THERE IS A STAR IN ME

Cambodia—Feminist Perspectives in Contemporary Cambodian Cinema

As part of the FrauenWelten film festival, the Heinrich Böll Foundation is screening the documentary MOTHER, THERE IS A STAR IN ME.

For the female musicians of the Cambodian group Medha, drumming is far more than just a hobby. Many of them are mothers, and through their music they navigate a world traditionally dominated by men: in many parts of Cambodia, drumming in particular is still considered a male domain. Medha claims this space as its own, thereby challenging traditional notions of gender roles. Amid rehearsals, performances, family life, and everyday routines, the film follows the musicians and shows how making music together creates a space for exchange, self-determination, and social engagement.

MOTHER, THERE IS A STAR IN ME celebrates its international premiere at the Filmfest FrauenWelten.

Following the film, there will be a Q&A with the two directors, Sreymom Mab and Benjamin Rigley. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to ask the directors questions directly.
