Gender Forum

The current referendum push by various interest groups could be viewed as a call for transformation of Kenya's outlook. The increased participation of women and youth in governance has been touted world over as being one method to achieve such transformation. Kenya's national parliament today hosts about 20 female parliamentarians while county assemblies comprise about 30% of women. Women have also been included in county executive committees and other key leadership roles in line with the Constitutional gender rule.

The Heinrich Boell Stiftung in partnership with the League of Kenya Women Voters hosts the Gender Forum this Thursday 28th August 2014 from 4pm to converse with female members of county assemblies on their experiences driving change at the devolved governance level.

Key discussion points:

• What is the aim of devolution?
• What are the drivers for transformation at the local level?
• What changes have taken place at local level through the input of women leaders?
• What strategies are needed to guarantee that positive transformation does take place at the lowest level?
• What structures for collaboration, advocacy and movement building are available to support women MCAs?

Discussion Panel:

The discussion panel comprises female Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) and representatives from civil society organisations.

About the Gender Forum:

The Gender Forum is a monthly public dialogue convened by the Heinrich Böll Stiftung since 2001, encouraging dialogue on pertinent national issues with a gendered lens. It brings together scholars, law makers and implementers, civil activists, government institutions, students and the general public, aiming at sharing knowledge and inspiring gendered analysis of policy and programmes. The forum also convenes in Kisumu in partnership with KEFEADO and travels around the country in response to county needs.
