The German Election – A new Impetus for Europe?
Reconnecting Europe V
Only a few more days before Germany will decide who will lead the country as chancellor for the upcoming four years. After the Dutch parliamentary and the French presidential election, this is considered to be the third crucial election within the European Union in this year. Although the campaign generally did not reach a high level of tension due to Angela Merkel’s lasting approval rate, the question of possible governing coalitions gains in importance. Does Germany head for another big coalition? If not, is there a chance for an alternative combination and what will be the different policy outcomes we can expect? What will the Greens’ position during coalition negotiations be? What will the results mean for Germany’s role within the EU? Does the next government take up the challenge of a German/French engine for Europe? How will the outcome impact the EU and European policy in the next years and what is at stake?
