Global Divestment Day at Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Southeast Asia
Let’s do the math: World leaders agreed that temperatures should not rise more than 2 degree Celsius due to climate change in order to avoid total ecological and humanitarian disaster. To keep global warming under this goal of 2 degrees, we cannot set more than 565 gigatons of carbon free into the atmosphere. Speaking of gigatons, this sounds like a lot. But considering how much carbon fossil fuel companies have already exploited, keeping in their reserves and are waiting to be sold and burnt, the picture turns- this third number is 2795 gigatons. Fossil fuel companies already have five times more of carbon in their backyard than we can actually use to fight the biggest challenge of our time. Still, knowing these figures, fossil fuel companies keep on investing big shares of their revenue to explore for more resources in the ground. How to stop?
The global movement 350.org suggests: Attack the fossil fuel industry where it hurts them most. Take their money. The Global Divestment Day is a world-wide day of action of the Fossil Free movement to reclaim the power of the people to decide on their future and demand everyone with shares in the fossil fuel industry to pull their investments out, to divest. If it is morally wrong to wrack the planet, it is also morally wrong to earn money with it.
As a part of the Global Divestment Day, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Southeast Asia is hosting a film screening and discussion on divestment in Thailand and is inviting everyone to come along, get informed and get involved. On the evening of February 13 at 5pm we will screen the movement’s campaign movie “Do the Math” on our terrace at the Bangkok office. Following up is a discussion with the possibility to ask questions. Drinks and snacks will be provided. The event is one in line with a series of screenings in February. Others will take place on February 13 in Ho Chi Minh City and February 28 in Kuala Lumpur.
Let’s make fossil fuels history.
