Global Public Investment

A New Framework for Global Cooperation?

Global Public Investment (GPI) is an innovative approach to financing global public goods—built on a simple but transformative idea: all countries contribute according to their means, all decide together on priorities, and all benefit.

Momentum around the concept has grown. Initiated by the Global Public Investment Network, a Coalition to Build Support for Global Public Investment was launched under the Seville Platform of Action (SPA) at the Fourth Financing for Development Conference. This government-led, multi-stakeholder coalition includes Uruguay, Colombia, CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Club de Madrid. To date, Germany has not joined the coalition. More recently, the G20 Leaders’ Declaration announced the Ubuntu Commission led by South Africa, that will “encourage research and informed dialogue on global public challenges and on global public investments.”

Building on these developments, this workshop aims to explore the GPI concept from a practical perspective and to discuss the process of the GPI-SPA task force and current coalition-building efforts. It will serve both as an information workshop and as a space for joint reflection and discussion.

The workshop brings together German civil society, development practitioners, and colleagues from the Bundestag, ministries, and academia to assess the feasibility and relevance of GPI and to consider whether Germany should support this innovative financing model. It is co-organized by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, VENRO, Forum for Environment and Development (Forum U&E), and Global Policy Forum Europe.
