Green Tea Morning: Development Infrastructures, Connectivity and Natural Resource Governance in Northeast India

In recent years, bilateral relations between India and Germany/the European Union have made notable progress. Although  Northeast India has historically received limited attention, its strategic location and ecological importance are increasingly bringing this complex, socio-political region into focus in EU-India engagement—particularly in the areas of connectivity, sustainability, and regional security.

However, the rapid expansion of large-scale infrastructure projects, often justified in the name of national security, development, and strategic interest, is placing significant pressure on this ecologically fragile and culturally diverse region. While investment in the region’s development is both essential and welcome, current approaches frequently undermine indigenous systems of knowledge and governance, as well as cultural identity, promoting standardized  models of economic growth and tourism that rarely align with local realities.

Against this backdrop, Heinrich Böll Stiftung (hbs) will host a “Green Tea Morning” in September 2025 at its Berlin headquarters focused on discussions about Northeast India. The event will feature a curated panel of civil society activists and academics from the region—drawn from hbs’ partner and extended networks—who will share insights and engage in dialogue on these critical issues.
