How can the EU strengthen and build new alliances for a global climate deal in Paris?

By invitation only

With a decision on the EU 2030 climate and energy framework expected in October, a core part of the EU’s offer to the international community will be agreed. However, the EU’s offer on climate finance and adaptation remain key elements that are yet to be decided. These are vital for trust and building confidence among countries but so far, the importance of adaptation has been underrated in the negotiations and considered an issue mainly for developing countries. With many of the EU’s natural allies prioritizing adaptation and resilience, including Africa, LDCs, AILAC and AOSIS, there is an opportunity for the EU to strengthen its diplomatic strategy.

Key questions to be addressed in the discussion include:

  • What strategic alliances are needed to achieve agreement on an ambitious and fair global climate deal in Paris? Can we build on the Durban alliance to build a stronger, durable partnership?
  • How can the EU build trust and confidence on adaptation and loss and damage to support greater ambition and an equitable deal?
  • How can we best secure the finance for adaptation and loss and damage?

The event will be moderated by Bastian Hermisson, Director of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union, under the Chatham House rule, with introductory remarks by Pascal Canfin, Senior Advisor for International Climate Affairs, World Resources Institute, Nick Mabey, E3G CEO and Stephen Hale, Deputy Advocacy and Campaigns Director at Oxfam International.

This event will be the third in a series of high level roundtable discussions “from Warsaw to Paris” (2013-2015) on EU ambition in the international climate regime. For details, please contact Silvia Brugger.
