Human Right to Food Workshop

Heron Portico Hotel, Nairobi - by invitation only -

We are planning an expert workshop on “Human Right to Food” on the 3rd and 4th March 2015 in Nairobi at Heron Portico hotel (Milimani Road). The aim of the workshop is to concretely advance methodologies and strategies which strengthen the human right to food in Kenya.

The Agriculture sector is central to the livelihood and food security of more than 75% of the Kenyan population. The sector adds up to 30% to the Kenyan GDP and shows highly volatile but moderate growth rates within the last years. Nevertheless, even though the prevalence of hunger decreased by nearly 8% to 24.3 % in 2012/14 since the turn of the Millennium the total number of people being food insecure stays stable at a very high level of more than 10 Mio..

Within the 2030 Vision of the Kenyan government agriculture development is one of the main pillars. Yet, little knowledge is generated how agriculture budget spending as well as political action may directly benefit those which mainly depend on agriculture development for securing their human right to food.  Kenyan government will need to find ways to strengthen socially inclusive agriculture production structures while stress of land and water, soil degradation, salinization of irrigated areas, migration of youth to urban areas and extreme weather will negatively affect agriculture productivity.

Within the two days workshop we are bringing together a small group handpicked experts from civil society, science and international organization to debate and strategize about important political steps which put the human right to food as a reference in the center of agriculture decision making. With inputs from various experts we would like to elaborate on aspects like current spending of the agriculture budget, how this positively affects food insecure people and how alternative pathways to strengthen the human right to food could be pushed on the political agenda.
