ICC-ASP 2019: Side Event at House of Europe

“Building Alliances in the Face of Ecocide”

Recognising that there is no one silver bullet to the planet’s climate, biodiversity and ecological crisis, environmentalists and climate activists worldwide have been creative in their approach, succeeding with some legal avenues and failing in others.
During the first half of the event, we will hear from those whose lives and livelihoods have suffered from serious loss, damage and/or destruction of their ecosystems, including climate and cultural heritage.
The second half of the event will explore the diplomatic, legal and civil/political avenues conducive to establishing ecocide crime. Areas to be addressed include: 1) procedures for amending the Statute, the stages and what is required; 2) what alliances of states, NGOs and civil groups could usefully support the process; and 3) creative strategies for ongoing alliance building.
