An insecure world
EU-China relations in a contested international order
With Donald Trump's second term as US president, it is now undeniable that global power relations are being renegotiated. The United States is no longer willing to uphold the rules-based order it co-created, and Germany and Europe can no longer rely on the transatlantic relationship. To achieve its self-proclaimed goal of strategic autonomy, Europe needs to reduce its dependence on Washington.
Meanwhile, China is advancing an alternative idea of international order. As an economic and political power, Beijing is translating its vision into concrete initiatives. In order to develop a proactive China policy, Germany and the EU must engage more seriously with China's global ambitions, identifying where interests overlap and where Chinese priorities conflict with European values and interests.
We will be discussing with:
- Janka Oertel, Distinguished Policy Fellow, European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR)
- Lü XiaoYu, Professor of International Politics, Peking University (PKU)
Moderator: TBD
The discussion will be held in English.
