The Iron Curtain Trail - Experiencing the History of Europe's Division

Friday, February 20th, 2015
12:30pm - 2:00pm
Goethe-Institut Washington
812 7th street Northwest
Washington, DC 20001

For almost half a century, Europe was forcibly divided into East and West by the "Iron Curtain," a border stretching from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea. Today, a European bicycle track, the Iron Curtain Trail, invites people to retrace and experience this important and divisive part of the continent's history. Michael Cramer, "the godfather" of this project, will give a presentation on this bicycle trail and - in discussion with Dr. Leonard Schmieding - talk about its historical and environmental implications in contemporary Europe.

Michael Cramer, Green Party Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of Transportation Committee in European Parliament

Dr. Leonard Schmieding, Visiting Fellow, German Historical Institute

Moderation: Bastian Hermisson, Executive Director, Heinrich Böll Stiftung

A light lunch will be served from 12:00 PM onwards.
