Jerusalem Talks III

State and Religion

You are cordially invited to the third round of the Jerusalem Talks.

Between Religion and State –
the Struggle for Dominion Over People`s Minds in Israel and Germany

The third round of the Jerusalem Talks series to be held on December 15th, 2014 will host a discussion on the influence of religion in Israel and Germany.
The Jewish religion has, by law, a strong impact on civil society and public life in Israel, whereas Germany is, according to its constitution, a secular state.
While Israel is battling to find a balance between its democratic principles and its religious laws and identity, Germany advances to grasp the idea of a multi-religious society. Both societies are deliberating the acknowledgement of religious and ethnic minorities’ rights in their country.

How can both societies keep religious rights and freedom without hurting their democratic and constitutional principles?
How do we prevent extremists from both sides to continuously load the existing conflict about land and nation with religious pretexts? Why does changing the existing regulations regarding the Temple Mount is so sensitive?
Do the current round of riots and killings in Jerusalem indicate the beginning of a religious struggle?
Will the driving forces towards enabling civil marriage in Israel succeed?
