Just Global Circular Economy
Where do we stand and what is needed?
As part of the Alternative Raw Materials Week, the Heinrich Böll Foundation and Germanwatch are hosting a panel discussion on the topic of a fair and global circular economy.
A holistic circular economy enables us to prevent many problems associated with raw materials extraction from the outset: it can reduce demand for primary mineral raw materials and thus alleviate the pressure on communities in mining regions in the medium term.
Given the current geopolitical situation and the increasing global competition for access to critical raw materials, the circular economy takes on a whole new significance: it contributes to the resilience of Germany and Europe with regard to critical raw materials, which are needed not least for the energy transition. But how do we ensure that this transformation does not cement unequal structures and repeat the mistakes of the linear economy?
Amid the tension between trade restrictions, partnerships on an equal footing and corporate responsibility, we ask: what would a truly just circular economy look like – and what needs to change to achieve it?
To this end, this event brings together representatives from the Global South, policy-makers, academia, business and civil society to discuss solutions for a circular economy that strengthens global justice.
