Myanmar and New World Powers
between China, Russia and India
When a military junta seized power in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, hope was great that the civilian protests could overturn the military. Three years after the coup, with thousands of civilians killed, tens of thousands arrested, and over one million displaced, Myanmar continues to descend into a civil war. While the controversial role of ASEAN regarding the Myanmar crisis has widely been discussed, we want to use the third anniversary of the coup to shed light on the role of the three key world powers India, China and Russia. What is their position regarding the conflict, how can this position be explained, and where should and could be points of intervention for German and European policy makers?
