Online panel: “Lebanon: Turning a New Political Page, but Where Now
Our research group, Middle East and Comparative Politics, Tübingen University, cordially invites you to its upcoming online panel titled:
“Lebanon: Turning a New Political Page, but Where Now?”
Content: On 9 January 2025, Lebanon's parliament elected General Joseph Aoun, the commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), as Lebanon's new president, ending a presidential vacuum that had lasted almost two and a half years ; and after four days , Nawaf Salam , head of the International Court of Justice, was named Prime Minister. These significant political changes came after Israel's 2024 offensive against Hezbollah, which has significantly weakened the Lebanon-based militant group, in addition to the fading Iranian influence/presence in Syria in recent years, most importantly after the HTS offensive that toppled the Assad regime .
While so many people see this as a “new phase in the history of Lebanon” and the first step in determining a new political map for the country and the region, many others are still carefully contemplating its aftermath. In our seminar, our speakers will discuss the implications of the se recent political developments on Lebanon's domestic politics: what do they mean for Hezbollah's role in and influence on Lebanese politics? and what are the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for President Aoun and PM Salam towards stabilizing the country? T he speakers will also touch upon the regional implications: How will these political developments affect the conflict with Israel (Lebanon's southern borders) and perhaps Lebanon's relations with other neighboring countries?
