Open City Lagos 2016

We often think of architects, engineers and builders as city-makers. In reality, a much wider pool of actors come together to craft the city, from policy makers to everyday residents. Whether choosing our transport mode or paying for a new shop window, our behaviours and decisions leave impressions in city and affect the experiences of others. We imagine, build, regulate, and mark the city in different ways.

Although co-produced, the benefits and opportunities that cities offer do not always reflect this collective action. To a large extent, women are major contributors and enablers of the activities that drive urban wealth creation. Yet they are also more adversely affected by poverty, insecurity and other forms of exclusion.

Open City Lagos 2016 is exploring issues that emerge at the intersection of gender and urbanism. How can gender-sensitivity be mainstreamed into the thinking, policies and systems that govern the city? What effect does the representation and prominence of women in education, urban practice, and policy have? What solutions may come from the socialized capabilities more readily associated with women, such as conflict management and generational thinking?

To take the conversation further, we invite you to a panel discussion with practitioners, gender specialists and researchers on October 7, 2016 from 10am to 1pm at Cre8, Cafe Neo, 6 Agoro Odiyan Street, VI, Lagos.
