Panel on Sustainable Aviation

Aviation plays a central role in our global society that demands more and more mobility. While air transport currently accounts for 5% of global CO2 emissions, the expected annual growth of 5% over the next years is a common challenge for industry, society and beyond. Consequently, aviation leaders agreed on a long-term plan to tackle its climate change impacts: from 2020, the aviation sector seeks to reach carbon-neutral growth. In how far can these targets contribute to the emissions reduction as agreed in the Paris agreement? How to meet these objectives actively? Which political conditions are necessary and what role to play for green innovation?

A first-ever cooperation project between Heinrich Böll Foundation and Airbus Group was launched last year in Germany to discuss how to align climate protection and air transport better. The three high-level seminars dealt with technical innovations and economic as well as regulatory and socio-political challenges together with various stakeholders from politics, society and industry.

The result of this sometimes controversial but always constructive discussion is a joint publication of the Heinrich Böll Foundation and Airbus Group. The English version will be published at a European panel discussion on 22nd June which seeks to offer an insight into the interim results of these discussions which are far from closed.
