Playing Otherwise

Three‑sided football – the first game of its kind in Greece – is part of the project “Playing Otherwise”, conceived by Biennale 9 and realized in collaboration with Heinrich Böll Foundation - Thessaloniki Office and Another Football.

The project seeks to explore the idea of a “social otherwise”, to reclaim access to public space, to question power structures and existing forms of competition, to claim the sport commons and to celebrate the revolutionary potential and joy of play.

The game is hosted by the Municipality of Thermi – National Youth Capital 2026 and will take place at the Kardia football stadium. It will be played among self-organized teams from Thessaloniki and Athens: FC Abalos, Becazzes FC, Faltsa FC, Muhabeti FC. A discussion will follow on the significance of solidary and joyful play.

This game is an action of the 9th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, titled “Everything Must Change. Radical Intelligence – Saloniki 9”, taking place from 23 May to 5 July 2026.
