Presentation of a study

Presentation of the study results "The economic implications of phasing out coal in Ukraine by 2030"
The European Green Deal and decarbonisation issue are on the top of the political discourse in Ukraine now. At the same time, substantiated data on the economic consequences of emission reduction policies are still insufficient. The question remains whether a "green" economic recovery is possible or the economy must necessarily fall victim to climate policy.
Given that the main source of greenhouse gas emissions in Ukraine is energy sector, and 8 out of the 10 most polluting coal-fired power plants in Europe are located in Ukraine, it is advisable to start the process of decarbonization from the coal phase-out, and, accordingly, to investigate economic consequences of this policy.
With this regard a study "The economic implications of phasing out coal in Ukraine by 2030" was conducted in October 2020 — April 2021. The researchers compared the economic consequences of two different scenarios for the development of the energy sector, one of which assumes a gradual coal phasing out in the power sector until 2030, and the second is based on maintaining existing trends.
We invite you to a presentation of the results of this study, during which the following questions will be discussed:
- What can be the electricity mix by 2030 in Ukraine, provided that coal power generation is abandoned?
- How much will it cost to reduce the coal part in the electricity mix and replace it with renewable sources?
- How will such an energy transition affect jobs, tax flows and GDP?
- What needs to be done to ensure socially just transformation?
