Presentation of the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2025
At the limits of feasibility – what role for nuclear in Europe’s energy supply?
In view of the European Commission’s forthcoming initiatives on Energy Security and on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in early 2026, we will present the latest edition of the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2025.
The WNISR is a landmark publication giving a yearly update on global and country by country reactor capacities, reactor age, startups and closures, new projects, SMRs, etc. plus special chapters about decommissioning, potential newcomer countries or nuclear versus renewables energy deployment. It is widely referred to by academia, politics and the press with hundreds of citations every year.
The report’s data and analysis point to the limits of feasibility of nuclear energy expansion and the new trends in global energy supply. It thus provides essential elements to the critical discussions on the extent to which nuclear energy can or cannot contribute to Europe's decarbonisation, affordability, and resilience objectives.
The report examines i.a. the intensifying difficulties of integrating nuclear power into decentralized flexible renewable energy systems, making reliance on costly nuclear energy for security of supply questionable. It also allows us to look at recent nuclear strategies of the Trump administration, the implications of AI’s suggested rapidly increasing electricity demand, and the US experience with Small Modular Reactor designs, offering valuable lessons for EU debate and policy strategies.
