TITLE: The Protection Against Domestic Violence Act (PADV) 2013

For the first time in Kenya's history, legislation that specifically addresses domestic violence has been enacted.

The Act was signed into law by President Kenyatta in May 2015 and seeks to provide maximum protection and relief to victims as well as protective measures.

Most importantly, it expands the definition of domestic violence to virginity testing, interference from in laws, widow cleansing, stalking and sexual violence in marriage, as well as economic and emotional abuse.

At the same time, police can now arrest perpetrators without an arrest warrant and individual's can report offenses on behalf of the victims.

The Act recognizes that domestic violence can be committed by either gender.

The gender forum will discuss the tenets of the new law as well as the constraints in enforcement based on culture.
