Queerness in Southeastasia
panel discussion
What does it mean for LGBTQI+ authors who are open about their identity in their writing to publish in Southeast Asia? The authors Marylyn Tan from Singapore and Norman Erikson Pasaribu from Indonesia discuss the respective regional contexts of queerness in Southeast Asia with the political scientist Khoo Ying Hooi from Malaysia: How do activists and authors organize themselves in the often very restrictive discourse contexts? And how do they seek to express themselves in their writing and engage in political resistance?
- Khoo Ying Hooi, Malaysia
researches human rights, democratization and civil society actors at the University of Malaya with a focus on Southeast Asia. - Marylyn Tan, Singapore
is a poet and artist. She was the first woman to be awarded the Singapore Literature Prize for English Poetry for her poetry collection "Gaze Back" [2018], which explores queerness and corporeality. - Norman Erikson Pasaribu, Indonesia
is the author of short stories, essays and poems. The English translation of "Happy Stories, Mostly" [2022, tr. Tiffany Tsao] was nominated for the Booker International Prize.
