Right Wing Populism and Gender Politics in Europe

In the European Union, the politics of gender and equality have been considered as a success story for a few decades. The women’s movement and institutional women’s studies had their part in this. Nowadays, right-wing populist movements spread all over Europe and mobilize against democratic institutions and especially against gender politics and sexual self-determination. Once claimed and achieved rights and practices – for example in the field of sexuality and reproduction – are questioned again.

The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Hessen hopes to discuss the following questions with experts from different European countries from politics, science and the field: How does the mobilization of right-wing populists influence Europe and the politics of the EU? Which historical and ideological sources does contemporary anti-feminism refer to? Who are the political actors? Which concrete rights are in danger? Which are the flaws of the policy of equality that now can be abused by right-wing populist forces? And should this phase of transition not as well be used to rethink and establish a new kind of emancipatory, feminist politics?
