Screening of Ex You (2023)

The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Global Unit for Democracy and Human Rights invites you to a private screening of Ex You (2023), a compelling documentary exploring trans rights and activism in the Balkans.

Through the diverse life stories of three transgender individuals, the film poses the question of freedom, understanding, and acceptance in countries torn between traditional principles and aspirations toward the West. Helena is an early retired major, the first military person in Serbia to change her gender. Kamila is from Bosnia and Herzegovina, still hoping transition in Serbia after years of trying. Vuk was baptized in Montenegro as the first transgender person who did not complete transition at that time. His gender transition unexpectedly saved his life.

Since the end of January 2025, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Global Unit for Democracy and Human Rights has been hosting Vuk for a Rest & Respite period, providing him with a space to step away from the challenges he has faced in his country, take a break, and recharge. His presence at the screening offers a unique opportunity for an intimate discussion about his experiences, which also shed light on the burnout and mental exhaustion that human rights defenders face in such conditions, as well as the resilience required to continue their work.
