Status of India’s Energy Transition and Indo German Cooperation (Part 2)
Green Tea Morning
As the world’s fifth largest economy and most populated country, India plays a major role in the field of international and foreign climate policy on a regional and international level. As the third largest consumer of electricity and the third largest renewable energy producer, India also plays a crucial role in curbing the global climate crisis. The government of India has announced ambitious targets in the pathway to net zero emissions by 2070 and is implementing several strategic programs and frameworks to bolster energy security and transition. At the same time, many international stakeholders involved in the energy transition space are increasing their focus on India as a crucial player in international climate action, the global energy transition scene, and as a provider of renewable energy. This is visible at international negotiation tables, during the current G20 presidency of India and through a spate of recent bilateral and multilateral agreements being signed. In the case of Germany this encompasses a series of agreements within the framework of a Green Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) signed in 2022 and further developed into practical action in 2023.
This second volume of our Green Tea Morning roundtables will follow up on our discussion held in July 2023. We will now look at the most recent developments in India in the field of Energy Transition during and after the G20 presidency. We aim to create a conversation between our guests about the impact that those developments may have on the bilateral cooperation space. And we again would like to reflect on the possibilities of civil society organization to become a stakeholder of decision and policy making spaces.
Our Green Tea Morning dialogue series wants to contribute towards a common understanding of an inclusive, just and sustainable Indian Perspective on climate and sustainable development policies in Germany and on an European level.
