Traces: Cinema, Memory, and Peace

Curated by Nilgün Yelpaze and Leyla Toprak

What role can culture and art play in the current peace process in Turkey? What does it mean to make films for peace? Through five short films, we aim to explore how cinema can help us confront the injustices of the past, keep memories alive, and envision a shared future. The selected films address issues at the heart of the debates surrounding the peace process in Turkey: the perspectives of political prisoners, mother tongue and education, identity and belonging, and the scars left by the war. In the discussion that follows, we will explore how cinema and other forms of artistic expression can bring people together in this process.

Films:

  • Destmala Sor (Red Handkerchief) (2016) by Leyla Toprak, runtime: 16 min
  • Zimanê Çîya (The Language of Mountains) (2016) by Lisa Çalan, runtime: 15 min
  • The Address (2022) by Aram Dildar, runtime: 15 min
  • Fingerprint (2021) by Zanyar Mihemmedînikû, runtime: 12 min
  • Dûr e? (Distant) (2015) by Leyla Toprak, runtime: 16 min.

The event is part of a series of events on the peace process in Turkey and the role of German-Kurdish voices. It is organized by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, and Off University.

On Friday, October 30, a public panel discussion on the topic “The Peace Process in Turkey—What’s Next?” will take place at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, Straße der Pariser Kommune 8A, 10243 Berlin.
