Truth in Fact
Neutralizing Fake News
The size and impact of fake news in times of the internet has been changing particularly when it comes to Syria. Russian trolls have been exploiting social media platforms flooding the internet with information that appeals to emotions and dismisses the facts, imbuing online discussions with contradictions and conspiratorial theories. They have also been harassing critics, activists and journalists to reduce them to silence creating unprecedented conditions that impede civic action and neutralize political mobilization.
Fortunately, journalists and activists are using open source tools online to counter this phenomenon and so we are holding this event in order to invite the public to take part in the investigative process that is reclaiming the truth with:
A panel discussion entitled: “Neutralizing Fake News”
Yula Altchouler: The Almanac Coordinator and Impact Producer Submarine
Emma Beals, Journalist and Editor of Syria Context
Zaina Erhaim, Syrian Journalist and Media Specialist
Christoph Reuter, Foreign Affairs Reporter and Syria Expert at SPIEGEL
Ayman Mhanna, Executive Director of Samir Kassir Foundation
Frances Topham Smallwood, Researcher and Civil Society Expert
The event will be followed by the screening of the documentary film “Bellingcat: Truth in a Post-Truth World” which introduces the growing investigative techniques that uses tools like Geo-location and social media to investigate heated subjects and cases.
