Trump 2.0: Implications for India and Europe
The Indian Foreign Policy Series: People, Power and Perspectives
Date and Time: 20 November 2024, 15:30 hrs IST (11:00 hrs CET)
The 2024 US presidential election was closely watched worldwide, with various international players and crises holding off on significant decisions until the results were known. Leading up to the election, there was considerable uncertainty about the foreign policy direction each candidate would take. Trump, known for his unpredictability, contrasted with Harris, who, as Vice President, had remained relatively unknown in terms of her foreign policy stance. Following Donald Trump's victory, global attention is now focused on the potential shifts in international relations, including in India and Europe. A Trump administration is expected to bring significant changes to diplomatic dynamics.
For India, this could mean reduced pressure on domestic issues but heightened trade tensions. Trump's assertive stance on China is likely to influence Indo-Pacific relations, which are crucial for India’s strategic interests. In Europe, Trump's critical view of NATO and his approach to Ukraine are likely to strain the Trans-Atlantic alliance, raising concerns about regional security and the future of collective defense. His presidency might lead to a recalibration of alliances and a more transactional approach to international partnerships, impacting global stability.
This webinar will examine the foreign policy implications of the outcome of the 2024 US presidential elections from an Indian perspective, while also identifying areas of convergence and divergence in viewpoints from India and Europe.
Key Questions:
- How has the Trump win been received in India and Europe, and what factors contribute to this response?
- What shared concerns or differing viewpoints do India and Europe hold regarding the incoming Trump presidency?
- What are the implications, if any, of a Trump presidency for the India-Europe bilateral?
- What security policy adjustments and strategies will Trump’s isolationist outlook likely trigger in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region?
