In the context of environmental due diligence there are often huge challenges in accessing reliable and independent data on environmental issues. Often they do not even exist, which causes difficulties in enforcing compliance with environmental standards. In this regard, participatory community monitoring can be of high relevance. It is an instrument that is little known in the field of environmental due diligence in the extractive sector until now, yet it allows communities to generate independent environmental data. This data does not only serve to alert communities themselves about possible risks of drinking contaminated water, to give just one example, but can also support the enforcement of due diligence by authorities. Furthermore, this data can serve as a basis for risk analysis by a company implementing due diligence. In the context of the OECD Practical Tool on Environmental Due Diligence in Mineral Supply Chains that will be presented during the Forum and an increasing number of mandatory due diligence requirements for example from the European Union, it is vital to recognise and promote instruments that foster the participation of affected communities to ensure a real impact on the ground.

This session will focus on the following aspects:

- The role of community monitoring in environmental due diligence.

- Community monitoring in practice and its different forms

- Possibilities for the use of data collected through community monitoring by downstream actors
