Workshop

When Liberal Democracy is on the Ballot

Proposals for a better political journalism from the US

How can journalists report on elections when liberal democracy is at stake? What lessons have US media makers learned from their confrontation with anti-liberal, populist and far-right actors? And which of these strategies can be applied to political journalism in the European context?

In this workshop, we will discuss these questions with renowned and innovative journalism experts from the USA, including Prof. Jay Rosen from New York University and Errin Haines, Editor-at-Large of the independent, non-profit newsroom The 19th*.

The workshop day offers the unique opportunity to enter into an open and critical exchange with our American guests. They will give an insight into how media producers can focus the public debate on the concerns of all voters and increase the visibility of underrepresented groups in a critical election year. Together we will learn about and discuss strategies from the US and develop ideas for better political journalism.

The registration deadline for the workshop day is June 9, and the workshop day will kick off with a public panel discussion on Monday evening. A separate registration via this link is required.

The event will be held in English (without translation) and exclusively analog, and is primarily aimed at media professionals who work in the field of political reporting or aspire to do so.

Journalists who wish to travel from outside Berlin are eligible for reimbursement of travel expenses (subject to availability). In addition, a limited number of hotel rooms are available, so please register as soon as possible.
