WMDFZ in the Middle East - What now?
The Heinrich Böll Stiftung, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies are pleased to invite you:
Thursday, May 7, 1:15 - 2:30 pm
NPT RevCon 2015 Side Event
Economic and Social Council Chamber
United Nations Headquarters, New York City
The idea to free the Middle East from all Weapons of Mass Destruction and establishing a Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone originated many decades ago. Nevertheless, little to no progress has been made so far. The event will discuss the current status of the diplomatic work to hold a Middle East WMDFZ Conference, review potential implications of current regional events on the prospects of such a Zone, and offer creative yet realistic proposals for what can be achieved during and following the NPT RevCon.
Welcome Remarks:
Amb. Matthew Rowland, UK Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva
Stephanie Mendes-Candido, Heinrich Böll Stiftung
Moderator:
Chen Kane, Center for Nonproliferation Studies
Panelists:
Karim Kamel, Social Science Research Council
Tiara Shaya, Atlantic Council
