A feminist exploration #6: Poland – the new battlefield for women’s rights and democracy
Watch the recording of this event here.
Join us for this year’s first edition of “A feminist exploration”, organised by the European Feminist Platform. This time, we will shed light on the situation in Poland regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights, democracy and the rule of law with a specific focus on the consequences of the ‘Constitutional Tribunal’s’ decision to ban abortion in case of foetal anomaly of October 2020. Together with Eliza Rutynowska we will explore the impact of the verdict on Polish women’s access to legal abortion, the reaction from Polish civil society and the general public as well as the Polish authorities’ repressive actions in the face of public contestation.
Eliza Rutynowska, a pro bono lawyer for many pro-women’s rights and democracy demonstrators, will explain how this court ruling fits within the wider puzzle of the degradation of democracy and the rule of law in Poland.
This discussion series is powered by and created for feminist scholars, activists and policy makers – in Europe and beyond.
Programme:
- 30-minute presentation by Eliza Rutynowska currently active as a pro bono lawyer for detained peaceful protesters, lawyer at the Civil Development Forum and active in providing support to the Polish Women’s Strike.
- 30 minute debate and Q&A with the audience moderated by Neil Datta, European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual & Reproductive Rights, Brussels
