Trump 2.0: The future of Ukraine and European security – Can the EU step up?
Donald Trump’s return to the White House will redefine the transatlantic security landscape. With his stance on Ukraine and NATO, signalling a shift toward reduced U.S. engagement, the EU faces urgent questions about its readiness to step up as a security provider. While security and defence are high on the agenda of the newly elected European Commission, domestic dynamics challenge a unified approach. Support for Ukraine is waning in key Member States.
With the war in Ukraine ongoing and questions looming over NATO’s cohesion, can the EU rise to the occasion? Is Europe prepared to lead in safeguarding regional stability, supporting Ukraine, and strengthening collective defence?
Rachel Tausendfreund (Senior Research Fellow, DGAP) and Roderick Kefferpütz (Director, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union) will discuss what EU scenarios are possible in this regard under a Trump 2.0 administration, presenting their paper US elections and European cohesion: Scenario implications for Ukraine and Transatlantic security.
Moderation by Sabine Hämmerling, Senior Programme Officer - Transatlantic and Digital Policy, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, Berlin
